How to Create and Configure a Basic Backup Job

Upon the first launch of SQLBackupAndFTP, you will be presented with a window to configure your first backup job. Also, a backup job can be created by clicking the big “plus” button at the left pan of the app or by clicking Job – Add Backup Job.

Below are the steps to create a backup job with basic settings:

1. Connect to a DBMS

Go to the “Connect to Database Server” section, click on the “gear” icon and choose the server type from the drop-down list.

Let’s assume you chose “Microsoft SQL Server (local)” to connect to your local SQL Server. In the opened dialog, specify your server name, choose an authentication method, and enter your user name and password. Once the required settings are entered, click on the Save & Close button to apply them. Note, that there is no way to set a connection without specifying a password.

2. Select databases to backup

To add databases to backup, click on the “gear” icon in the “Select Databases” section and, in the opened window, choose databases that should be backed up.

    • To backup all non-system databases check off the appropriate option
    • To add system databases to your backup job enable the Show system databases option
    • You can exclude the databases from your backup job by specifying them in the corresponding box manually or by using regular expressionsTo apply all the settings click on the Save & Close button.

3. Choose destinations

Go to the “Store backups in selected destinations” section, click on the “plus” icon, and choose a destination to which the backups should be sent. Multiply destinations can be used.

Assume the backups will be sent to a local folder and Google Drive. Add the destinations one by one, completing the needed forms.

4. Set a backup schedule

Navigate to the “Schedule backups” section and turn on the schedule.

By clicking the “gear” icon, you can find the advanced schedule settings where the differential and transaction log backups can be enabled. You can also set more detailed schedule settings allowing you to start a job at the time you need.

To apply the settings click on the Save & Close button.

5. Set email notifications

To be notified about backup job status we recommend to set at least one option to receive the notifications if a backup job failed. That can be done in the “Send confirmation” section.

These are the basic backup job settings.
